Purpose of the Course

The Access course aims to develop your self-esteem and confidence, to improve your social skills, life skills, and independent living skills and to maximise your potential through an individual programme relevant to your needs. The course focuses on basic education, independence, interpersonal relationships and improving your learning through a variety of practical and realistic learning opportunities and is the ideal foundation to prepare you for independence and employment.

Qualifications

The Access course will give you the opportunity to gain qualifications from Entry Level 1 to Level 1 in employability. 

The Foundation Learning programme will support you in a personalised programme of study to enable progress onto higher level courses. It offers generic workplace skills for example:

  • Working with other people
  • Time keeping 
  • Communications


It will also include subjects students are interested in for example:

  • Childcare
  • Hospitality
  • Construction
  • Hair & beauty


Modules

  • Working with others
  • Rights and responsibilities at work
  • Learning through work experience
  • Maintaining work standards
  • Customer service
  • Communicating with others 
  • Health and safety in the workplace
  • Travelling to work
  • Exploring job opportunities


You will have the opportunity to improve your functional skills in:

  • English, including reading, writing, speaking and listening
  • Maths, including time, money, weight, measurement, area, percentages and ratio


Practical experiences

You will develop your practical skills in:

  • Cookery
  • Gardening
  • Sport
  • Drama
  • Creative Art
  • Enterprise

This course will also give you the opportunity to do realistic work experience placements, with support if necessary.

The programme promotes learning outside the classroom and practical experiences. Classes are held in different locations around the community.

Entry Criteria

To enrol onto the Access course you will need a good attendance record and a reference from your school.

Personal Development & Skills

There is a strong thread of personal and skills development embedded in your course helping you to access and apply the knowledge and skills you have gained in a variety of settings.  In addition, you will participate in our Enrichment activities and develop a deeper understanding of the society we live in by having the opportunity to explore and discuss current affairs.  You will have a personal tutor who will help you every step of the way, and friendly support staff to assist you where necessary.  Your tutors will work closely with you to help you achieve your goals.

Assessment Method

You will be assessed through a variety of methods such as written and practical assignments, observation and witness statements.  Your lecturers will assess your work which will be internally verified and then externally verified by the awarding organisation.

Progression Opportunities

Your tutors will provide information, advice and guidance to help you make informed decisions about your next steps, which may include progressing onto a Level 1 course at College, employment or further training.

Additional Learning Support

Some students may require additional support for a number of reasons. At the start of your course you will be asked to complete an initial assessment in order for us to identify any additional needs that you may have. During your course, your personal tutor will be able to guide you on how best to access support.
