Purpose of the Course
Vocational Studies course is a work related qualification designed to give you the knowledge, understanding and skills to prepare you for employment or further study. It is ideal if you are interested in the first step towards a range of careers including Creative & Digital Arts, Childcare & Early Years, Health & Social Care, IT & Computing, Construction, Hair & Beauty, Hospitality & Catering, Health & Social Care, Construction or Sport & Public Services.
Course Outline
You will study a range of topics, alongside maths and English.
Units of study:
- Developing a Personal Progression Plan
- Communicating with customers
- Keeping active and healthy
- Being organised
- Contributing to your community
- Developing digital information using IT
- Working with others
- Researching a topic
- Two subject-specific units
Some units are classroom based, others are more practical in nature and will include educational visits off-island and a variety of sport and skills experiences such as:
- Go-karting
- Rib voyages
- Forest schools
- Gardening
- Golfing
- Archery
- Cookery
Work placement is a key element in this course and you will be supported to find the right work placement for you where you can experience first hand a job role that you are interested in to develop the behaviours, attitudes, knowledge and skills needed to be a valued employee.
Entry Criteria
Entry Level 3 qualification and/or the ability to work towards Level 1 along with a commitment to study and an interest in progressing into your chosen career.
Personal Development & Skills
Personal development is an integral part of the course and you will be supported to develop your confidence, team work, self-management and improving reliability and dependability, as well as exploring career choices and identifying your next steps. In addition, you will develop a deeper understanding of the society we live in by having the opportunity to explore and discuss current affairs.
Assessment Method
You will be assessed through a variety of activities including written work, observation, presentations and practical assignments.
Progression Opportunities
Your personal tutor will provide you with information, advice, guidance and support to enable you to progress onto a pathway that is right for you. This could be a Level 2 course at College, an apprenticeship or employment.
Additional Learning Support
As part of your learning programme, if you have not yet attained a grade C/4 or equivalent in mathematics and English language, you will be required to study a Functional Skill or GCSE in these subjects.
Some students may require additional support for a number of reasons. At the start of your course you will be asked to complete an initial assessment in order for us to identify any additional needs that you may have. During your course, your personal tutor will be able to guide you on how best to access support.
