CIGPE Lunchtime Lecture – ENERGY HARVEST

Presented by Diego Padilla Philipps on Wednesday 14 September 12.45 – 1.15 at Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts

The Channel Islands Group of Professional Engineers (CIGPE) is the representative body for the professional engineering institutions in the Channel Islands. Membership and attendance at events is open to all regardless of professional qualifications or career.

The group aims to promote and support professional engineering in the Channel Islands.

About the lecture

We might not notice it, we may not see it, but everything moves. The floor under our desks moves up and down as our colleagues walk past; the windows vibrate as the wind blows outside. Tall buildings are particularly affected by the wind; they move and sway. The taller the structure, the stronger the wind force upon it. Diego Padilla Philipps, structural engineer at WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff explains how we can harvest energy from building movements.

As structural engineers, we design buildings limiting how far and how quickly they sway so that it becomes unnoticeable, otherwise it would be impossible to work or live in one. But they all move, particularly more in areas prone to natural hazards such as storms or earthquakes; especially as weather conditions are becoming more extreme due to climate change.
