Purpose of the Course

Aspire is a supportive, full-time Level 1 programme designed for learners who need additional time, confidence and structure before progressing into mainstream vocational study or employment.

Course Outline

The purpose of the course is to bridge the gap between school and further education, providing vocational tasters, personal development, and academic support in a practical, nurturing setting. It is ideal for students with additional learning needs, interrupted education, or those exploring their next steps through a clear and structured transition year.

Learners follow the BTEC Level 1 Introductory Certificate in Vocational Studies. The programme offers a choice of themed vocational pathways and embeds personal development and progression planning.

Learners complete two core BTEC units plus three optional units, tailored to the pathway chosen. The timetable gradually increases practical experience and workplace readiness through projects, enterprise, and shadowing. The programme is delivered through practical, project-based learning. Each term has a clear theme and outcome.

Pathways include:

  • A – Vocational (Business/Community)
  • B – Health & Fitness
  • C – Health & Social Care
  • D – Creative & Technology
  • E – Hair & Beauty
  • F – Aspire Apprenticeship

All learners complete core units in personal progression planning and organisation, and undertake extended work experience in term three.

Entry Criteria

Applicants should be working at Entry Level 3 or Level 1. Entry is based on interview and assessment to ensure the pathway matches individual needs and goals.

Personal Development & Skills

Personal development is an integral part of the course and you will be supported to develop your confidence, team work, self-management and improving reliability and dependability, as well as exploring career choices and identifying your next steps. In addition, you will develop a deeper understanding of the society we live in by having the opportunity to explore and discuss current affairs.

Assessment Method

Assessment is through coursework and practical activities aligned to the BTEC grading criteria (pass, merit, distinction). Learners are assessed on project outcomes, presentations, written reflections, and teamwork. Progress in English and maths is assessed through Functional Skills or GCSE resits.

Progression Opportunities

Successful learners may progress to a Level 2 course, traineeship, or employment depending on their chosen pathway and development throughout the year.

Additional Learning Support

As part of your learning programme, if you have not yet attained a grade C/4 or equivalent in mathematics and English language, you will be required to study a Functional Skill or GCSE in these subjects.

Some students may require additional support for a number of reasons. At the start of your course you will be asked to complete an initial assessment in order for us to identify any additional needs that you may have. During your course, your personal tutor will be able to guide you on how best to access support.

We can offer the following:

  • Progress Coaches
  • Learner Support assistance (1:1)
  • Learner Support assistance (group)
  • Learner Support assistance (drop-ins)
  • Specialist ESOL teaching
